Today's review will be about the book Notre Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), by the French author Victor Hugo.

It was published in 1831 and sought to preserve the values of the French culture in a time period of great change, which resulted sadly in the destruction of many French Gothic structures and threatened to make light of the vibrancy of the 15th century. The church of Notre Dame became a national icon and symbol for the restoration of Gothic.
The story takes place in Paris in 1482 under the reign of Louis XI and revolves around Esmeralda, a 16 years old gypsy girl who with her little goat Djali, entertain people as a street artist. The antagonist of the story is Claude Frollo, the archdeacon of Notre Dame who is infatuated by her, resulting in being slimy and doing everything he can to make her change her mind.
Frollo is the legal guardian of Quasimodo, a 19 years old guy who is hunchback and have several deformities. He works as the bell-ringer of the church, and because of this job, he became deaf as well.
Esmeralda is not interested in them, though, only a man has caught her eye, the Captain of the Archers: Phoebus de Chateaupers.
Full of vicissitudes, the book will "explore" every point of view of the main characters, making you laugh, cry and even shiver in disgust.

I loved it. It is my second experience with Hugo after reading Les Misérables, and I must say I preferred this one, even though, of course, they are two different topics.
The plot was really good and interesting. I liked the way Hugo described the old Paris that no longer exists and the fact that there were many plot twists. I really disliked the character of Frollo, but it was so well written that you can't help but appreciate it.
The ending was devastating, because I was not expecting it to end so sadly, but it was perfect any way. That's what made me love it, the fact that I felt so many emotions thanks to a short book of just 600 pages.

La recensione di oggi riguarderà il libro Notre Dame de Paris (Il gobbo di Notre Dame), dell'autore francese Victor Hugo.

Fu pubblicato nel 1831 e cercò di preservare i valori della cultura francese in un periodo di grandi cambiamenti, che purtroppo portò alla distruzione di molte strutture gotiche francesi e minacciò di far luce sulla vivacità del XV secolo. La chiesa di Notre Dame divenne un'icona nazionale e un simbolo per il restauro del gotico.
La storia si svolge a Parigi nel 1482 sotto il regno di Luigi XI e ruota attorno a Esmeralda, una zingara di 16 anni che con la sua capretta Djali, intrattiene la gente come artista di strada. L'antagonista della storia è Claude Frollo, l'arcidiacono di Notre Dame che è infatuato di lei, risultando viscido e facendo tutto il possibile per farle cambiare idea.
Frollo è il tutore legale di Quasimodo, un ragazzo di 19 anni che è gobbo e ha diverse deformità. Lavora come campanaro della chiesa, e per questo lavoro è diventato anche sordo.
Esmeralda non è interessata a loro, però, solo un uomo ha attirato la sua attenzione, il Capitano degli Arcieri: Phoebus de Chateaupers.
Pieno di vicissitudini, il libro "esplorerà" ogni punto di vista dei personaggi principali, facendoti ridere, piangere e persino rabbrividire di disgusto.
"Perché, quand'anche non si credesse in nulla, vi sono dei momenti nella vita nei quali si appartiene sempre alla religione del tempio più vicino."

L'ho amato. È la mia seconda esperienza con Hugo dopo aver letto Les Misérables, e devo dire che ho preferito questa, anche se, ovviamente, sono due argomenti diversi.
La trama era davvero bella e interessante. Mi è piaciuto il modo in cui Hugo ha descritto la vecchia Parigi che non esiste più e il fatto che ci fossero molti colpi di scena. Non mi è piaciuto molto il personaggio di Frollo, ma è stato scritto così bene che non puoi fare a meno di apprezzarlo.
Il finale è stato devastante, perché non mi aspettavo che finisse così tristemente, ma è stato comunque perfetto. Questo è ciò che me l'ha fatto amare, il fatto di aver provato tante emozioni grazie a un breve libro di appena 600 pagine.
