Today's review will be about the book Crime and Punishment, by the Russian author Fedor Dostoevskij.

The book was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866 and later published as a single volume. It is his second full-length novel and it's considered the first great novel of his mature period of writing, considered as one of the supreme achievements in world literature.
The story follows the mental struggle and moral issues of Rodiòn Raskoln'ikov, and impoverished ex-student in Saint Petersburg, who is planning to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker, an old woman who stores money and valuable things in her flat.
He theorises that with that amount of money he could free himself from poverty, from the struggles he finds himself in and perform good deeds with it. He convinces himself that those kind of crimes are justifiable if they are committed for removing obstacles to reach the higher goals of "extraordinary" men.
He imagines himself being one of those great men, a Napoleon, but he soon embarks a game of cat and mouse that is way more dangerous that he thought it would be. Followed by a suspicious police investigator, Rodiòn is pursued by his conscience and buried under his own guilt. Only Sonja, a downtrodden sex worker, can offer the chance of redemption.

I liked it way more than I thought I would have.
It went really smoothly and I'm glad that it didn't end as badly as I was imagining it would have had. I felt glad for the final because now a new life will begin for Raskoln'ikov.

Il libro fu pubblicato per la prima volta sulla rivista letteraria The Russian Messenger in dodici articoli mensili nel 1866 e successivamente pubblicato come volume unico. È il suo secondo romanzo integrale ed è considerato il primo grande romanzo del suo periodo maturo di scrittura, considerato uno dei massimi successi della letteratura mondiale.
La storia segue la lotta mentale e le questioni morali di Rodiòn Raskoln'ikov, ex studente impoverito a San Pietroburgo, che sta progettando di uccidere un usuraia senza scrupoli, una vecchia che immagazzina denaro e oggetti di valore nel suo appartamento.
Teorizza che con quella somma di denaro potrebbe liberarsi dalla povertà, dalle lotte in cui si trova e compiere con essa buone azioni. Si convince che questo tipo di crimini sono giustificabili se vengono commessi per rimuovere gli ostacoli per raggiungere gli obiettivi più alti di uomini "straordinari".
Immagina di essere uno di quei grandi uomini, un Napoleone, ma presto intraprende un gioco del gatto e del topo che è molto più pericoloso di quanto pensasse. Seguito da un sospettoso investigatore della polizia, Rodiòn è perseguitato dalla sua coscienza e sepolto sotto la sua stessa colpa. Solo Sonja, una prostituta oppressa, può offrire la possibilità di redenzione.

Mi è piaciuto molto più di quanto pensassi.
Scorreva molto velocemente e sono contenta che non sia finita così male come immaginavo. Sono stata contenta per il finale perché ora inizierà una nuova vita per Raskoln'ikov.
