Radio Silence - Alice Oseman

Radio Silence
- Alice Oseman

🇬🇧 Hi! How are things going for you? Today I'm here with a novel from English Literature.

Check out my last review about I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki by Baek Sehee.

---

Today's review will be about the novel Radio Silence, by the British author Alice Oseman.

---

It was first published in 2016, and it was re-printed this year 2022.

The story takes place in Kent, England, where the author is from.

It sees the life of Frances, a teenage girl that has been a "study machine" for all her life with just one goal, get into an elite university.

Nothing will stand in her way, but things change when she meets Aled, and for the first time in her life, she isn't afraid to be herself, freely.

Thanks to her favourite podcast, Radio Silence, she will discover a new freedom. But when the trust bond between her and Aled gets broken, she's left thinking about who she was before and who she longs to be now.

She is left with having to confront her past, and what happened to Carys, Aled's sister. She has to confess why she disappeared.

It's only by facing up to your fears that you can overcome them. And it's only by being your true self that you can find happiness.

But what if everything you set yourself up to be, in the end, isn't what you really wanted?

The book explores the themes of LGBT and mental health issues, especially depression.

About the author: Alice Oseman is class 1994 and is from Kent, UK. Her other books are Solitaire (her first novel), Heartstopper (became pretty popular on the social media. It got adapted into a Netflix tv series (:) and Loveless (her most recent one). She writes young adult novels.

---

Second attempt reading Alice Oseman and I wasn't disappointed. Clearly it's nothing compared to Heartstopper that still holds my heart hahah but it was a really cute reading.

I got the feeling while reading it that it would have ended badly, but thankfully it didn't. It ended just the way I wanted it (: The characters were all amiable and I felt actually connected to their problems, because they were also mine while I was a teen.

The story, obviously, from the themes that are being faced, is not all roses, so get ready ;)

It's a 4/5 recommendation!

🇮🇹 Ciao!

🇬🇧 Hi (: How are you all doing today? Here I am with a memoir from Korean Literature.

Check out my last review about The Club of the Book Fairies by Thomas Montasser.

---

Today's review will be about the intimate memoir I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki, by the Korean author Baek Sehee.

---

It is her debut book, originally published in Korea in 2019, but in my country it was published in 2023. It soon became a bestseller since it was also recommended by BTS (: I picked it up for a collaboration between Mondadori and my Instagram page @thegalaxybooks (:

Baek Sehee is a young social media director at the publishing house of her dreams when she begins to see a psychologist about her depression. She feels really self-doubting but also judgmental of others. She hides her feelings pretty well at work or with her friends and boyfriend, because her lifestyle "requires it".

But the effort is exhausting and keeps her from forming long and deep relationships. This isn't normal.
That's why she's asking for help.

Recording her dialogues with her psychologist over a twelve-week period, by also adding a micro reflective essay on each session, Baek begins to understand her harmful behaviours that keep her locked in a cycle of self-abuse.

The book is part a memoir and part a self-help one. It will appeal to anyone who has ever felt alone or unjustified in their everyday despair.

Because, who didn't feel alone sometimes? Or unaccepted? Or even not pretty enough?

"But rightly so, if my attitude doesn't change, my problems don't change either."

---

As I said above, I've picked it up because of a collaboration and I'm glad I opted for it. I thank Mondadori for the opportunity they gave me and I hope to receive other collaborations in the future (:

It was a nice book, it went really smooth because it was only 150 pages, so pretty short. I felt like I was being analysed by the psychologist as well as Baek, and I've found out that I could actually relate with her in some parts, such as when people were making fan of her or the struggle with the weight or the part where she gets annoyed easily by people. We are all quite similar in that 😂

The last part with the appendix though, was a bit too long to be honest. She could have shortened it.

It's a 3/5 recommendation if you want to have a reflective reading, but get ready to relate to almost all her issues.

🇮🇹 Ciao (: Come state oggi?
